After a self-imposed discontinuation of traveling site work during the pandemic to remain home and raise children, Jonathan Brilliant lost his key motivating factor for making monumental works: Deadlines. In a self aware gesture Brilliant began asking AI questions like

“How do I make a Jonathan Brilliant style Art installation? Include step by step process with images.”

“Create an image of artist Jonathan Brilliant making one of his woven installations”

“How do I sell Jonathan Brilliant's site specific installations”

“What are some of the challenges for Jonathan Brilliant selling his work?”

“How did Jonathan Brilliant tour the world making his art? Give me step by step instructions for mounting a tour of my own Jonathan Brilliant Style art installation.”

The responses were fascinating as the AI had been fed, not on vetted information, but (much like the original Google algorithm) only what was commonly repeated or linked. With a 20 year head start of internet coverage and press releases (often penned in the third person by Brilliant himself), he found answers returning from chatbots confidently using his own descriptors of his work. What else was surprising was how the uncanny speculative AI images of what a jonathan brilliant art installation would look like resemble much of the AI visual art slop, except that they were very buildable for an artist with 20 years of experience making works based on woven algorithms. This algorithm chasing is also evident in an earlier lithograph by Brilliant where he mapped out his 2006 mutual linking strategy in order to ensure that his name came upon when “Jonathan Brilliant” was entered in a google prompt.
